Nước cứng xuất hiện khi nồng độ Canxi, Magie trong nước quá cao làm tăng độ cứng của nước, gây kết tủa.

2. Phân loại các mức độ cứng
Người ta phân loại thành: độ cứng tạm thời và độ cứng vĩnh cửu.
- Độ cứng tạm thời (độ cứng cacbonat): Chứa muối hidrocacbonat của canxi và magie. Dưới tác dụng của nhiệt độ, các muối này sẽ chuyển thành muối cacbonat kết tủa màu trắng. Do đó, người ta thường dùng nhiệt độ để làm giảm độ cứng tạm thời.
- Độ cứng vĩnh cửu (độ cứng phi cacbonat): Chứa muối clorua và sunfat như MgSO4, CaCl2 của canxi và magie. Nhiệt độ không thể làm giảm độ cứng vĩnh cửu bởi không tạo chất kết tủa. Thay vào đó, người ta sẽ sử dụng các chất hóa học như soda, vôi tôi… để giảm độ cứng.

3. Các đơn vị đo
Độ cứng của nước được đo bằng nồng độ các ion Ca2+ và Mg2+ trong nước. Mỗi quốc gia đều có đơn vị đo nước cứng riêng, hiện tại chưa có đơn vị quốc tế cho độ cứng. Ở Pháp dùng đơn vị °f, ở Đức dùng °dH, ở Anh dùng °e.
Còn đối với Việt Nam thì người ta thường dùng mili đương lượng trong 1 lít (mđlg/l), nếu độ cứng của nước quá bé thì dùng micro đương lượng trong 1 lít (mcrđlg/l).

- Ppm: 1 mg/l CaCO3
- Gpg: 64,8 mg canxi cacbonat mỗi gallon( 3,79 lít) hoặc 17,118 ppm
- 1 mmol/l tương đương với 100,09 mg/l CaCO3 hoặc 40,08 mg/l Ca2+
- 0dH : 10 mg/l CaO hoặc 17,848 ppm
- de: 64,8 mg CaCO3 mỗi 4,55 lít nước tương đương 14,254 ppm
- 0f : 10 mg/l CaCO3 tương đương với 10 ppm
4. Phương pháp xác định độ cứng của nước đơn giản
Thường mọi người sẽ sử dụng các loại thuốc thử và dựa vào phản ứng của nước với thuốc thử để tính toán được hàm lượng Ca, Mg trong nước từ đó xác định độ cứng.
Chỉ số này thường được biểu thị bằng CaCO3 có thể phân loại như sau:
- CaCO3 <50 mg/l là nước mềm
- CaCO3 ~ 150mg/l là nước cứng ở mức độ trung bình
- CaCO3 >300 mg/l là nước rất cứng và sử dụng gây nguy hiểm cho sức khỏe của người dùng
Để áp dụng phương pháp chuẩn độ Complexon, người ta sẽ sử dụng dung dịch đệm là NH3 + NH4Cl có pH = 10 bằng chỉ thị eriocrom đen T.
